Three Tips on How to Answer the Forgotten Question

“Do you have any questions?”

So many college students worry and prep for the standard behavioral questions asked in an interview, such as knowing their strengths and weaknesses, goals and aspirations, and describing successes and failures. Many people tend to forget about the last question recruiters typically ask: “What questions do you have for us?” While this question can appear optional, your response can greatly impact the overall impression you make during an interview.

For many, the standard answer is “No, I don’t have any questions.” Although this may seem like a polite response, it doesn’t take advantage of any of the things this question has to offer. And ultimately, recruiters everywhere use this question as a secret test to really gauge a candidate’s interest in working with their company. Your response to this question has the potential highlight your research of the company, your curiosity for this profession, and your interest in the interviewer’s opinions. Simply answering “No”, would be leaving an opportunity untouched to show your interest in this company.

1. Have general questions prepared for any interview.

The first thing to do is create standard questions that can be used during any interview. Asking about company culture and professional development opportunities are a few suggestions. Choose questions that show you care not only about the job, but also the work environment, and your potential career progression and longevity within the company.

2. Research and create company specific questions.

The second way to prepare for this question is to do research. Look up company websites and social media pages to get a better understanding about the company’s mission, big projects, and values. Being up-to-date on a company’s activities allows you to create specific questions that show off your research. A little bit of research goes a long way in showing your preparedness.

3. Ask about opinions and experiences.

Don’t be afraid to ask your interviewers about themselves and their own experiences. Ask them what they like most about their company and what their career path has been like. This can help you form a deeper relationship with someone within the company as you get to know their story and opinions.

So, the next time you have an interview, prepare in advance for ALL the questions, including “So, do you have any questions for us?” Take advantage of this question to show your preparedness, your research, and your interest. It can be what separates you from the other candidates. Also, don’t be afraid to ask more than one question. Interviewers will take any opportunity they can get to talk about their company and tell you why you would love working there. At the end of the day, recruiters are interested in you and are eager to find the next best employee.
