Raise your hand if you know a Debbie Downer

Debbie Downers are everywhere. They are in your dorms, in your houses, in your classes, at your work, and in public. Unfortunately, there is no way of ensuring that they stay away from imposing on your happiness. So, all you can do is learn how to react when the negativity tries to take down your positive vibes.

1. Don’t take it personally.

Most negative people are not only mean to you, but they are mean to everyone else they encounter as well. You must recognize that negative attitudes are based on the individual’s own self-reflection. Their beliefs about themselves along with their beliefs about the different events happening in their lives are coming to the forefront. Let them vent, but don’t let it ruin your day.

2. Don’t RSVP to their pity party invitations.

Debbie Downers love to throw pity parties, however, it is not good to dwell too much on what went wrong. If you RSVP to a pity party, you will never help the person move forward into a more positive state of mind. Debbie Downers thrive on bringing people down to their level. Instead, encourage and help them come up with solutions that will move their lives in a positive direction.

3. Realize that life is a series of ups and downs.

Even though life is full of highs and lows, you don’t have to go through it with them. Empathy is different than shared suffering. Part of life and the human experience is developing from the negative situations. To start, you can assist them in the recovery process by paying them compliments and lending positive affirmations. Help them believe in themselves!

The bottom line is that you are in control of your own happiness. Being happy is an important part of your overall health and well-being. So, don’t let anyone throw shade on your sunshine.
